Bellingham Club Hosts Korean Exchange Students
Western Washington University's Extended Education Youth Program partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County in order to connect students to local culture.
The kids had a blast participating in activities that taught them about each other's cultures! The fun went beyond water games and sports, and they were able to enjoy multicultural music and food together.
Gardening is a healthy fun activity for children. It develops new skills about basic science and how to grow and sustain their own food source. Gardening deepens a variety of skills such as planting, mulching, weeding, and then cooking and eating! Some of the produce ingredients that go into the meals are grown by the kids themselves and are hand picked from their gardening clubs as well food from local farms.
Istride is an online learning platform that assess members academic skill gaps and then delivers interactive games to help close their particular skill gap. In just 20 minutes a day two to three times per week members can increase their grade level performance significantly. Helping members close their individual skill gaps helps make them more independent learners.
In 2016 Whatcom County Clubhouses were ranked second in points, meaning we are reinforcing kids learning more than almost any other Club nationally. Check out our county’s point results here http://www.stridebgc.com/.
Healthy Foods Program
Food options such as edamame bean pasta salad, cucumber and chicken pita, and black bean chili are new nutritious options for our local youth. Club kids are being fueled with dense and calorie rich healthy options and learning that the foods they consume produce the energy needed to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Some of the produce ingredients that go into the meals are grown by the kids themselves and are hand picked from their gardening clubs as well food from local farms. Most days kids help prepare the meals too!
Those who are competent and efficient with technology at a young age will benefit local businesses in the future. This club promotes giving the kids a platform to be able to excel in school and the future as the technological world continues to expand.
SMART Girls Skills Mastery and Resistance Training
Encouraging young women to have healthy attitudes and lifestyles, SMART Girls helps them reach their full potential. Through dynamic sessions, group activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls enjoy the opportunity to build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good healthcare, and developing positive relationships.
Other topics addressed include how the media influences attitudes about females; date rape and sexual harassment; sexually transmitted diseases; sexual myths and truths; getting regular gynecological care; and physical and emotional changes girls experience.
Summer Brain Gain
Designed to prevent summer learning loss and foster critical creative-thinking skills, Summer Brain Gain has been developed specifically for Boys & Girls Clubs. In addition to the participating Clubs that will receive program training and project-based learning strategies, Summer Brain Gain curriculum will also be available for free to all Clubs across the country.
There are many other programs and clubs that are implemented in our gym, art room, tech lab, and games rooms but this is an example of some of them. Suggestions for new programs and clubs always accepted from members!
