EIGHT YEARS OF PLANNING, FOUR YEARS OF FUNDRAISING, ELEVEN MONTHS OF CONSTRUCTION----THE NEW FERNDALE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB IS OPEN!!!!
The grand opening of the new Ferndale Boys & Girls Club took place on June 16, 2010. Over 400 community members attended the event, emcee’d by State Senator Dale Brandland. Honored guests included State Representatives Kelli Linville and Doug Ericksen, Whatcom County Executive Pete Kremen, Ferndale Mayor Gary Jensen, past Mayor Jerry Landcastle, and members of the Ferndale City Council. Featured speakers included Branch Director Josh Wilund, Executive Director/CEO Lynn Templeton, Branch Board President Steve Oliver, Doug Thomas of the Rotary Club of Whatcom County North, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County Corporate Board members Bill Gorman and Ward Fridrich. The celebration included a Lummi blessing and words from Les Nichols, Vice President of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
The building crew—including designers and architects Susie and Doug Landsem, green architect Alistair Jackson, General Contractor Mark Pottle, engineers Ken Kok, Ken Gaston, Gary Benson, and Greg Ebe, Superintendent John McGrath, Project Manager John Daniels, General Foreman Carl Dietrich—and all the craftswomen and craftsmen in attendance were recognized and thanked. Over 40 people participated in the ribbon cutting. Many thanks to the Silver Reef Casino and Resort for catering the large gathering.
The 21,134sf Clubhouse is located at the corner of Second and Cherry Streets in Ferndale’s Pioneer Park. The facility adjoins the Pioneer ballfields and includes the full sized BP gymnasium, electronics control room, storage cabin, utility center mezzanine, front mezzanine and training center, athletic storage, games room/activities center, the Dick Metcalf Teen Center, arts lab, the NPCE Teen Tech room, the media and music room, the St. Luke’s health education center, the ConocoPhillips technology center, front entry and counter control, staff offices, coat check, and a full sized/commercial grade kitchen.
Total cost of the facility- including pre construction, permits, inspections, off-site, architectural and engineering—is $4.8 million. Funds were raised as the centerpiece of the “Campaign for Kids,” a $5 million capital-development campaign of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County. Our deepest thanks go to the Ferndale Branch Board, Steve Oliver, Carol Brumet, Elie Samuel, Ron Dahl, Mary Wilson, Kathey Chambers, Rick Staeb, the Corporate Board, Club staff, volunteers, patrons, Christine Destry, Katherine Freimund, Barbara Martin, Scott Nelson, the Washington State Boys & Girls Club Alliance, the Board of Governors, Lloyd Tolle, Chet Lackey, Bill Unrein, and the many contributors and patrons who supported the project.
The Club was be the site of the June 16th Auction, and will be open for kids on June 28th.
